Kanisa means "church" in Swahili, the most commonly spoken language in sub -Saharan Africa.
The Kanisa project is an effort to highlight life in churches in the Los Angeles area that have an African heritage.
The congregations in so-called "African churches" are not truly African or homogeneous. In our experience the membership is mostly multicultural and a mix of people from all countries, races and ethnicities.
We hope that through Kanisa, more people get a view of the diversity of the "African" church in LA and find that they are a home for everybody.
